In last 10 years, SEO has gone through a sea-change becoming even more competitive for new bloggers. Thousands of bloggers from different countries of the world are competing for just one long tail keyword to rank on the first page of the Google Search page.

Right now, a blogger who is new to blogging finds very intimidating to outrank well established bloggers for a given niche. They are quite dismayed by the very fact that how they are going to outrank a blogger who is ranking on first page for years now.

But the good news is that yes you can outrank your toughest competitor in a short time! After reading the entire article even a newbie will be able to muster courage to outrank their toughest competitor in no time considering SEO has changed a lot over the years.

Only thing they need is to follow and implement strategies honestly given in this article.

If you follow every activity of your competitor, like what type of content he is writing, what keywords he is targeting, backlinks to his site etc then you can easily outrank them.

You are basically going to re-engineer after your competitors. In other words, your competitors will do all the hard work and you will just copy after them and give your name.

You will spy your competitors for mainly three things their keywords, backlinks and content. If you want to outrank your toughest competitor then spying is the most important strategy that you need to learn.

The best part of spying is even a new blogger can learn and implement it in just few weeks.

So out of 5 SEO tactics given in this article, pay more attention to Spying.

In order to spy effectively you have to use certain tools specifically created for this purpose.

You can either use anyone of these two tools

  1. SEM Rush

  2. AHREFs

I personally recommend using the second one.

Spying and Reusing Your Competitor’s Keywords

First, you have to steal all the keywords of your competitors for which they are ranking on the first page of Google.

Here you have to find out two things.

  1. What type of content they are writing for different keywords?

  2. Are these keywords profitable enough for which they are ranking on the first page of Google?

So how do you do it? As I said, you use tools like AHREF or SEM Rush.

Here, we are using Ahref tool.

Step 1: You go to the Ahref and type in the domain name of your different competitors. Type in a domain/website name in the search box and click the Search option.

Step 2: Then click on “Organic Keywords” on the left side of the screen. You will get a result page looking similar to the image below.

You will clearly see from the results that the website URL you had just typed in will be ranking on No.1 or No.2 position of the first page of the Google search for certain keywords mentioned in the “keyword” column.

If you are still not sure then you can verify manually by typing these keywords in Google Search Engine. You will definitely find a match.

After manual search it will be quite clear that the domain name you typed in is indeed ranking at No.1 or No.2 position for a particular keyword.

Now, you can start examining all the content created by this particular website you just spied on.

Your job as a new blogger is to study the content and outrank this website by creating slightly better content than what they created.

Likewise, you have to do the same thing with other keywords.

You have to choose right keywords based on the following 3 parameters.

  1. Position

Search Position on the Google search result page. It must be on the first page in top 3 – 4 position.

  1. CPC

Cost Per Click means how you get paid for each click if you create content based on a particular keyword.

  1. Keyword Difficulty or KD

KD must be low so it is easy to beat competition. Go for LSI keywords especially if you are a new blogger.

Spying Backlinks and Making it Yours

After keywords you have to target your competitor’s backlinks too. The Ahref tool will make it really easy for you.

Step 1: In the search box, type the name of same website and hit the Search button.

Step 2: On the left side of your screen, from the panel click on “Backlink Profiles”

Step 3: You will see a list containing all the backlinks linked to this particular site.

Now you are free to steal all the backlinks of your competitor and try to make your own.

Similarly, you have to search for all other competitors’ on Ahref and steal it.

Spying Content and Making it Better

Last but not the least thing to spy on is the content of your competitors. Read all the content that is ranking high for different keywords. High ranking content is considered to be “Best Performing” content.

You have to find such “Best Performing” content of your competitors and make it better. For searching such content you can type in your topmost competitor’s website and click “Top Pages” tab in the Ahref tool.

The result will show you links of all the best performing pages with monthly traffic they receive. Study the content closely, find it out what is missing, improvise it and try to outrank even all your competitors.

Spying competitors is one of the best, effective and easiest tactics to follow especially if you are a new blogger.

Though spying is the most important component of this strategy but you can’t depend only on it.

You also have to make best use of latest on-page SEO techniques designed specifically for 2017.

    Visitor’s Fulfillment is Must

Since 2012, Google has evolved a lot. Now it considers visitor’s satisfaction as the most compelling criterion for ranking a website high on the top position of its search result page.

Hence, the most important on-page SEO tactics for the year 2017 will be creating content that readers would enjoy to read and keep coming back to your site for more.

    Engaging Your Viewers

You can engage your visitors only by reducing your website’s bounce rate. And that is possible when you talk to your visitors back and forth through your writings.

An engaging content allows visitors to stay on your website for a much longer duration and also bring them back for more.

Google loves lower bounce rate and returning visitors.

Hence, it is very clear from last two points that there is no shortcut to creating high quality content.

    Long and Organized Content

    • You have to write an article which is at least 1500 words long. If the length is more than 2000 words then it is even better. Gone are the days when bloggers used to write 800 – 1000 words articles. Add images, videos, infographics into the article and make it rich in content.

    • Structuring all of your content according to different categories is very important. For example, if your website has articles about work from home jobs and internet jobs then don’t mix them, put these two articles into two separate categories.

    Internal Links

This may comes as a shock to you that internal links are more powerful than low quality backlinks.

The best thing about them is they can be easily created and raises the page authority of pages in your website.

According to Google, a page with more internal links pointed towards it has more authority than a page without it.

Structure all the content of your website by putting them into different silos with each silo dedicated to a given niche.

Create internal links and outrank your competitors.

    Optimizing Images

Optimizing images gives a blogger an upper hand over their other competitors. You can use most relevant keywords for naming all images in the website.

    Click Baiting

Click Baiting is not advisable but it can bring traffic quickly and beat your competitors easily. However it is dangerous in a long term.

Now Google considers only high quality backlinks as one of the major factors for ranking a website on its search page.

Start with Building Your Own Authority

You will not get high quality backlinks unless you build your own authority.

You can build authority of your website by creating great content, disavowing any low quality backlinks and let the website grow old.

This will definitely increase your blog’s DA.

    Quality Matters

If you are serious about outranking your competitors then go for quality matters. You can easily outrank them if you only create high quality backlinks for your site.

In 2017, numbers doesn’t matter at all. What matters is the quality backlinks coming from websites with high DA.

1 Backlink from a site with high DA is more valuable than 100 backlinks coming from sites with very lower DA.

So don’t waste your time creating low quality backlinks. Let your competitor’s do that.

    Links from Top Websites

If you are able to get even one backlink from websites like New York Times, WSJ, WaPo or Forbes then you can beat your toughest competitor in a matter of few days.

Although it is going to be very difficult to get one but keep on trying.

    Guest Blogging

If you can’t get links from top dogs then go for old school way of getting backlinks through Guest blogging.

Write for blogs with high DA and ask them a link.

    Broken Link

Here is a window of opportunity for a new blogger to easily beat most well-entrenched competitors in few weeks.

You can leverage power of broken links to beat your competition.

    Follow the steps given below

Step 1: In Ahref tool, click on Site Explorer and Enter the domain name of your website.

Step 2: In Backlinks Section, click on the Broken Tab.

Step 3: You can copy all the broken links from the given list and set up 301 redirects.

Your competitor’s too will have broken backlinks just like you.

Step 4: Go through the top 10 competitors for broken backlinks and reach out to all the linking websites with your new content as a replacement.

This technique will definitely help beating your competitors easily.

Number four is content marketing. You can use your website’s content as a marketing tool to rank high on Google.

Great content can really differentiate you from rest of your competitors.

    Engaging Your Readers

Any type of engagement is not possible unless you understand your readers. You need to find out what your readers are looking for?

Why are they on Internet and your website?

What is their problem? How can you solve their problems?

If you have answers to these questions then you can definitely create great content.

Do a thorough keyword research and make a list of all those keywords with maximum searches.

Later, you can create content based on these keywords or queries.

    Targeted Content

There are circumstances when Google would like to rank an article with more relevant content over an article with more backlinks but less relevant content.

So your website must contain targeted content and not vogue content.

Remember short but relevant content will outperform long but vogue content.

This is yet another tactic that will put you ahead of the curve. Targeting mobile devices and social signals can help you catching up with experienced bloggers very fast.

    Developing a Mobile App

Google loves traffic coming to your website from mobile devices. Google would prefer to rank a mobile friendly website ahead of a non mobile friendly website.

Hence, to attract more mobile traffic you can create a mobile app and let users download them for free.

    Social Media

Now, Google considers social signals as one of the most important factors for ranking a website. You have to get retweets, likes and shares for your each article and video you create.

However, retweets or likes must be from high quality accounts and not low quality with zero followers.

In concluding remarks I would say SEO has changed a lot over the years and constant changes are taking place. Whether you are a blogger or plan to start a SEO business you need to adapt to these changes.

If you are able to implement state of art SEO techniques then you can outrank even your toughest competitor easily.

It really doesn’t matter how inexperienced you are, you will be still able to beat your toughest competition. So start with spying your competitors and remodel after them.

Later, try implementing rest of the 4 tactics mentioned in the article.

Combination of all these 5 tactics will easily help you outranking your toughest competitor.
