Troubleshooting WordPress Problems

I’ve been developing themes since 2005, and I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to hear hosting companies “blame the theme” when any error arises, because they do not understand how WordPress works, and in some cases do not even know plugins exist.

(If this happens, please consider switching hosting companies, here are my favs. )

The number one culprit for any sort of error on your site is usually a plugin conflict. This means that one of your plugins is causing either your theme, or another plugin to malfunction.

Before you take the time to deactivate your plugins, you can use Chrome Developer Tools to find most errors. Simply right click on the area of your site experiencing problems, and then select Inspect from that menu.

From there you’ll have several tabs to assist you.

Most errors are found in the Console tab.

Troubleshooting Plugins

In order to narrow down which plugin it is, or if it’s a plugin at all, take the following steps.

Clear any caching plugins you have installed.

Deactivate all of your plugins.

Clear your browser’s cache.

Do a hard refresh. (command+shift+r).

If your issue is remedied, you can definitively say it’s a plugin causing your problem.

Now it’s time to reactivate plugins to find the problem. Do this one by one.

After activating each plugin, do a hard refresh, and view your site to see if the error reappears until you find the culprit.

Once you discover the problem plugin, delete it completely from your site. Clear your caches again.

If it’s a plugin you’d like to keep, contact that plugin’s support desk and let them know you took steps to eliminate any other plugins being the cause.

A lot of hosting companies have server side caching these days, so you’ll also want to check with your hosting company to ensure they’ve cleared/deactivated any caching in order for you to properly troubleshoot. If you use Flywheel for hosting, and I highly recommend you do, it’s as simple as toggling a button off/on in your dashboard, or hitting the “flush cache” button. Gosh their user interface is so clean, organized and dreamy!

Customization Errors

If you’ve made customizations to your site and are having problems, try using
Diff Checker. You can compare the original CSS with your current CSS and look for discrepancies that may be causing your issue.

Another fantastic tool is CSS Lint, you can paste your CSS into the box and it will show you any errors you may have, something as simple as a missing ; or } can turn your site into a hot mess, so this tool is especially helpful for sanity.

There you have it, my favorite tools for troubleshooting any problem you come across while working on your WordPress site.

Are there any tools or services you use that I missed here? Leave ’em in the comments below, I’d love for this to be a solid resource for all of you to come back to anytime you have a problem.

Have a wonderful day, friends!

xo Lindsey

What Is Digital Marketing?

In the last decade, the reliance on the Internet has certainly changed the way in which business is conducted. It is clear to most business owners that without an online presence, your business is truly missing out on a majority of marketing, advertising, and success. Nowadays, anyone who is anyone maintains their own blog, social media platform, and of course a website. If you are a business owner and you do not have a website, you are neglecting to market yourself in the most effective way. That is why it is critical for every business to not only build a site for themselves, but also reinforce its presence through digital marketing.

What is digital marketing? And, how/why is this kind of advertising so important to a business? Let's consider these important elements of online strategizing:

What is digital marketing?

In its very essence, this kind of advertising conjoins the promotion and advertising in an online platform. The basic principles, values, ad tactics of traditional marketing are still at the core of this innovative phase, there is a seemingly more insightful guise into the consumer behavior and target demographic. This digital promotion possesses all kinds of internet marketing, however it focuses on digital media. SEO is only one kind of digital marketing tactic.

The way in which digital promotion is enforced is another interesting property. Various sources can be utilized to promote products and services of a business, including websites, mobile devices, instant messages, and SMS among many others. In addition, the digital nature of this kind of marketing is regarded as one of the most cost effective means of advertising.

Two kinds:

Push digital marketing: Just as the name suggests, push marketing is projected to push the advertising information directly toward the target clientele. Often times, marketers will initiate the push marketing through email, RSS, or SMS, truly targeting the receiver or clientele with a personalized message. This means is also powerful in that it is easy to track, monitor, and measure the relative efficacy of the marketing.

Pull digital marketing: The pull method of marketing is aimed at garnering customers to come to you. The marketing for this means will be communicated to compel the individual to make a call to action or come visit your business. The most obvious or pervasive example is a web page, website, or any other Internet based medium. While this means of digital advertising is not as easy to personalize or track, it is still effective and powerful nonetheless.

Online Marketing Strategies – What is Acquisition Marketing?

Online marketing can no longer be considered as an afterthought when developing a marketing strategy. In 2008, Ofcom reported that online marketing represented a fifth of total UK revenues from advertising - and we believe it's still got a long way to go.

There are good reasons for its unprecedented growth. One of the main reasons online marketing has always been at an advantage to other forms of marketing is because of its ability to drive acquisition, in such a transparent and accountable way. More often than not, it is 'acquisition marketing' that clients are looking for - marketing with the end goal of acquiring new business. A well thought out acquisition marketing shouldn't even stop there, but should really continue into the realms of adding value to the acquired customers to ensure repeat business where applicable, and/or referrals.

How to achieve acquisition through online marketing

In order to achieve effective acquisition marketing, there needs to be a clear and cohesive pathway for the customer to follow, right from the first click through to the point of conversion. This starts with a clear understanding of what you want the customer to do. If this isn't clear in your mind, then it's going to be very hard for the customer to figure out.

A marketing campaign which successfully brings thousands of people through to your site, all of whom are not particularly interested in what you have to offer and so leave immediately once they get there, cannot be called acquisition marketing. Traffic is simply a means to an end, and as such - can become a time consuming red herring.

A campaign which brings in thousands of people who are interested in your products or services, only for them to be bamboozled with such labyrinthine navigation or off-putting messages or design that they give up and go elsewhere before converting, is also not acquisition marketing.

A successful acquisition campaign must keep the visitor engaged at every single point along their journey towards becoming one of your valued customers.

This can only result from a genuinely integrated approach to online marketing, working on all areas of a campaign simultaneously, with the sole aim of leading visitors through seamlessly to the point of purchase or conversion. Implementing funnel / drop-off tracking is also key in this process, as often there is more to learn from the 'non-converters' than the 'converters'.

Short AND long-term benefits

There is still a place for brand building exercises, which will not only change or enforce your consumers' perceptions of you over time, but also deliver better recall, referral and brand equity.

But with acquisition marketing, it is important to look for measurable ways to increase levels of sales and conversions in a much shorter space of time. Part of the trick here is to not only make the process easy for customers, but also to spend time understanding their mindset, needs and concerns. By understanding these, you can begin to alleviate them - by offering them extra information, assurance or testimonials along the conversion funnel. Ideally, you want to dispel any concerns they have before they have even manifested.

Working with this mindset, you will be able to take marketing forms such as pay-per-click advertising, and make them work even more efficiently than they are already.

Keeping your customers happy

When people have had a good experience with a customer or product, they simply can't spread the word fast enough. Looking after your customers in the same way is one reason why acquisition marketing is also of long-term. Happy customers do two things: return and refer.

Increasingly, as natural SEO has evolved from being focused on "onsite" optimisation techniques - and moved into using more and more "offsite" factors when determining a site's importance - an increasing number of long-term benefits from arise from SEO work as well - including link building, content optimisation and strategic partnerships - all of which can yield results for many years to come.

The significance of measurability

The real key to acquisition marketing is measurability, and this is something uniquely suited to online marketing.

For those in the business of online marketing, there are now an almost infinite number of tools at our disposal for diagnosing precisely what kind of results our efforts are generating with our online marketing techniques.

This means that it is possible to prove, without doubt, that you are gaining the right kinds of results, with an extraordinary amount of precision. It's no wonder that, according to the European Online Advertising Through 2013 report, online ad spend is predicted to carry on growing throughout the recession.

Integrating Social Media Into Traditional Marketing Methods

Many digital marketing experts say that social media has gained the upper hand over traditional marketing methods. It's not really a big surprise since social media is free, effective, and easy to use. With few clicks of the mouse, you can get in touch with thousands of potential customers. What business owner would not want to take advantage of that?

Traditional media like the television, on the other hand, continue to rise in advertising costs. And many small scale businesses would immediately think they can not afford to shell out that much money especially when they can do marketing for free.

But do you know what? Integrating social media into traditional marketing methods and vice versa can be worth a shot. The combined powers of the two can give your business the maximum exposure and visibility it needs to thrive and succeed.

To fully understand the advantages of integrated marketing, let us look at the pros of each method. Traditional marketing, which is not only limited to TV but also includes radio, newspapers, magazines, brochures, posters, and billboards is a non-interactive way of talking to consumers.

Although not interactive, these forms of media can reach a wider scope of people. That's right. Internet users may have grown huge in number over the last years but many people still do not have a computer or internet access at home. TV is still more broadly used than the internet.

But that's not to say that the internet has nothing to show for. The internet is the first medium of its kind as it allows for interactivity that can not be found in any other medium. When you send your message to your potential customers, you can get real-time feedback.

People can also post reviews about your products, post comments about your poster ads, or ask questions about your marketing campaigns. Internet is more personal in the sense that it lets you talk to the consumer in a two-way conversation.

Now that you know the advantages of both marketing methods, here are some ideas on how to use one with the other:

· Always include business website address on all print ads such as posters, newspaper or magazine ads, and brochures.

· Mention the phrase "visit our website or blog at ____" at the end TV or radio commercials.

· Post videos of TV or radio commercials on YouTube or other video social media sites.

· Post posters and print ads on website and social media sites like Facebook or Pinterest.

· Announce online contests on TV or radio.

· Promote marketing events like trade fairs and seminars on both traditional and digital media.

· Endorse your social media links on TV programs (eg Facebook links appears on a basketball game halftime).

· Be a media partner for events so that your social media links can be included in the posters and other traditional marketing methods.

The possibilities for combining traditional with digital are countless. Take advantage of both to give the best exposure for your company.

Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Business – 2

Welcome to Part 2 of my series and we’ll be exploring other factors that are important to know when you’re starting a business. Over the years, I’ve worked with many people and they’ve run into issues simply because of their mind frame. This is NOT uncommon for those who are first-time entrepreneurs, especially because they simply don’t know what to expect going forward. In the first part, we looked at factors like:

  • Business is harder than you expect
  • Networking is important
  • A clear bottom line

In Part 2, I’ll be looking at some other important factors that are important to know when starting a business and will protect you going forward. Let’s jump right in…

Being Passionate Matters

Many people often get involved in a business they are NOT passionate about and this hinders their success going forward. I can’t stress how important it is to really love what you do or you won’t push forward when things are getting tough. For example, I’ve worked with many people and have had several businesses in the past that all produced a common trend. First, the ones that survived are the ones I was truly passionate about and this goes for my clients, too. Next, much of the success had to do with the fact that when you are passionate about your business, you’ll push forward when you hit barriers along the way. I always recommend to ONLY get involved in those businesses which you’re passionate about because that’s the difference between success and failure. It comes down to the fact:

With passion, you push forward when you face adversity. It’s that simple!

Competition is Tough

From my experience, almost any niche you’ll be involved with will have competition and this is something you should be mentally prepared for. Many people new to business will think one-sided and that competition isn’t something that will affect them. However, competition is definitely something that’ll affect your bottom line because you’ll have to fight for your customers. Personally, I think competition can be used to your advantage simply because you can learn a lot from them. I’ve researched my online competition to understand the following:

  • What content will resonate well with my audience
  • Where MOST of my audience will be located
  • What keywords they are targeting and how I can incorporate them in my business
  • Depending on the tool, I can find out gender and education

I’ll admit, when I first started in the business, I didn’t think too much about competition and how it would affect my business. However, over time, I realized, with competition, I’ll be fighting for customers so I had to tweak my marketing to find ways to compete. I also realized how I can use my competition to my advantage to better understand my audience, etc.

Lifestyle Change

Running a business is very tough and you’ll have to do things on your own when starting out. This means making a change to your daily routine so you can manage day-to-day tasks. For example, when I started blogging, I had to change my work habits around to fit my schedule and so I could get everything I need done. This meant waking up earlier, writing more often, cutting down recreational time, and completely tweaking my working hours. The way you approach this will be different for everyone and you might have to continue to tweak your schedule until you find one that works well.

From my experience, I know the following were things I had to tweak going forward….

  • Waking up timing
  • Working hours
  • Exercise schedule
  • Break time
  • Office location

As mentioned, the elements you decide to change will depend on your current working habits and what you feel is getting in the way of your success.

What is Content Marketing?

Most businesses strongly differentiate between content and marketing. They perceive marketing as the distinct process by which they sell their content. (Note: content in this context can refer to any product and / or service). They believe that giving away content is a money losing exercise.

This thinking is counter-intuitive. If your prospect does not have the chance to sample your (best quality) content, they have no means to assess its worth, and no reason to trust your value proposition.

When you think of your content, you should think of it in the following context:

  1. Free Line Content . Content to attract prospects, get subscribers, build your prospect list.
  2. Relationship Content . Content to connect with prospects, build relationships. (Moving parade).
  3. Conversion Content . Content to make a product offering.
  4. Income Content . Content that is your core income producing product and / or service.

(Note that content 1 to 3 is most often a sub-set of your Income Content).

Thinking of your content as marketing, as opposed to the thing your marketing sells, produces a significant paradigm shift. It switches your thinking from trying to 'get' something, to trying to 'give' something.

It switches your thinking FROM:

"How can I persuade or convince my prospect to give me their money?"

TO:

"How can I give my prospect the highest value; how can I get them to take advantage of my knowledge and gain some real world experience; use the content and get some results; so that when I will go and ask them would you like to invest in some of my other stuff they say YES, because they TRUST you and have first-hand experience that your products work for them. "

Businesses that use content marketing create more trusting, ending relationships with their prospects and clients, resulting in better conversion and higher client Marginal Net Worth.

Here's a 4-step process for how to use your content as marketing:

1. Move the freeline .

  • Identify the most EMOTIONAL need or want your prospect is experiencing.
  • Create a piece of freeline content that helps your prospect achieve their need as quickly as possible.
  • Put the content into the highest perceived value package.
  • Get it into the hands of as many people as you can possibly find to take it.

2. Build Relationships .

  • Make a list of the top 10 problems your prospects are facing. (Note that you focus on peoples problems as people are generally more motivated moving away from pain than toward pleasure).
  • Create a piece of "Relationship Content" to help your prospects get results as quickly as possible.
  • Structure this content into a high perceived-value and easily absorbable format and give it away to prospects (IE emails, PDFs, reports, audios, podcasts, videos, e-courses, etc).

3. Convert Sales.

  • Focus on customer problems, frustrations, desires, goals - and continue to learn by asking questions.
  • Start selling individual consultations and move to groups of 3, 5, 10 or more.
  • Build a "Conversion Conversation" based on asking questions and matching your materials to the specific problems your prospects mention.
  • Based on your first 100 "Conversion Conversations" create conversion literature that streamlines your sales process.

4. Lifetime Value.

  • Move your clients through sales funnel using content as the enticement.
  • Continue to deliver Relationship and Conversion content through the lifetime of your client. IE Continue to deliver them content and value until such time as they ask you to stop.
  • Remember that it's OK to ask your prospects and clients to buy from you. Delivering valuable, free content builds reciprocal obligation; your prospects will feel compelled to buy from you to return the high value you provide them.

What Is A Marketing Initiative?

Marketing is not as simple as many may lead you to believe. In order for your business to be effective, you need to understand what is involved in promoting what you are offering in terms of products and services. That is where a good marketing initiative comes in to play. A marketing initiative is essentially anything that is clearly defined as a marketing effort. Simple, isn't it? It is basically anything specific in your marketing plan. So what types of things are considered marketing initiatives? Here are a few examples that may help you.

For larger companies, a marketing initiative can be a theme. For instance, a set of commercials that use a specific character or funny situation over and over may be considered a marketing initiative. This, though, would certainly be more common with large businesses. An example of this is the Geiko commercials that feature the cute talking gekko. The initiative is to associate their car insurance services and products with a character that sticks in your head. Being cute is an added advantage. This is why many commercials use cute, cuddly characters such as babies and puppies etc.

Another example of a marketing initiative is undertaking a certain method relentlessly. Sometimes you may wish to focus your efforts solely on one method of marketing. If, for instance, you decide to implement email marketing with great fervor, then you can call that your email marketing initiative. You will outline a plan very specific to that initiative. And you will carry it out. Focusing your efforts into a sole initiative demands that you understand it intimately. You better know what you are doing if that's the ONLY initiative you've got. In addition you also need to have a backup plan in case your initiative does not come through for you as you hoped. Often, when you put all your eggs in one basket, you better have more eggs!

Another type of marketing initiative you may invoke is a large scale shift in what you are doing. If you are going away from traditional marketing to exclusively use the internet that is a whole new marketing initiative you are putting in place. Though not as specific as other examples, it is certainly something that directly affects the marketing of your company. These types of initiatives are usually done parallelly with your existing marketing initiatives. The old initiatives are slowly phased out as the new one takes over.

A marketing initiative can also be as simple as a shift in an idea. You can have a new marketing initiative that simply changes the way you promote your company, or more specifically what about the company you are trying to promote. A shift in positioning is a good example.

Marketing initiative is a broad term that is used often. However, if you understand what it is you will be more able to effectively put an initiative in place if you need to. Changing or implementing an initiative is a big part of the promotion of your business. So it's important that you understand what it means in the first place.

Develop Your Skills, Not Your Platform

Let me preface this by saying that everyone is different and we are all embarking on different journeys. The individual circumstances of your specific situation are going to vary from everyone else. That’s life. That’s just the way things are and we can all take a different path to achieve success, however we choose to define what that means.

Back to School?

A lot of people are going to tell you that pursuing higher education at a college or university is a waste of money, particularly if you’re going after a liberal arts degree. They’ll tell you that getting a Bachelor of Arts in political science or linguistics or art history is a huge waste of time and money. I totally get where these people are coming from, because it can be extremely difficult to draw a straight A-to-B line between these degrees and successful career paths. It’s true.

These are the same people who will then offer one of two main types of advice. First, they’ll tell you that if you’re going to go to school, you should go into the trades, because that kind of practical education provides a direct path to a specific kind of job and many of these jobs can pay a very healthy salary. You can learn to be anything from a plumber to a dental hygienist.

Alternatively, they might tell you that you should skip school (after getting your high school diploma, of course), because you can learn anything you want to learn on the Internet. For free. And then you can start your own business, be your own boss, make your own rules, and reap the endless rewards of entrepreneurship. To some extent, this can be true too, but it can also be very limiting.

Can you make it as a big Internet marketer with no formal education? Absolutely. But you’ll also find that many of the most successful entrepreneurs online have some background in sales, marketing, business, or some other related discipline. School can have its place.

The MySpace Generation

I came across a video the other day where the person was recounting a conversation they had with an enthusiastic young man. He asked him about his strategy to achieve success online. The response was that the young man was going to make a YouTube video and get it to go viral.

If it really were that simple, everyone would do it. You can’t just say that you’re going to make a viral YouTube video and suddenly it racks up millions of views. It doesn’t work that way. There are tactics you can employ, but there is never any guarantee of anything “going viral” online. There is no magic bullet. The other big problem with this strategy was that it relied entirely on YouTube.

YouTube is huge right now. Some people might even say it’s over-saturated. But that could change in a heartbeat. If all you’re doing is developing specific strategies for only this one platform, your entire online business will implode the moment YouTube goes kaput. The Internet is fleeting and fickle.

Several years ago, I knew someone who had developed a successful online business on MySpace. She sold these special customizations and everyone loved them. She was making more money than she had ever thought possible, so she threw all of her eggs into that basket. We know all know what happened to MySpace. During that time, she never thought about her long-term viability and how she would outlive MySpace. Last I heard, she has a fairly conventional 9-to-5 type job.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with a 9-to-5, but that means her online “dream” died along with MySpace. This is why you shouldn’t work solely on building on a single platform. You need to develop skills that can adapt to other platforms and other opportunities.

Skills to Pay the Bills

I graduated from university with a degree in psychology (minoring in English literature). Some people will look at that degree and say that I wasted five years of my life and untold thousands of dollars. I disagree. It was through my university career — including enrolling in the co-op program for real work placements, attending a number of student workshops, and engaging with other intellectually-minded individuals — that I gained and honed a number of soft skills.

They didn’t connect directly back to a specific career or job path. I do not make my living today as a psychologist, but I do leverage my research skills, my logical thinking skills, my writing skills and so forth each and every day as a freelance writer and professional blogger. The world will continue to change all around me and the specifics of the situation will be in a constant state of flux, but these soft skills allow me to be more malleable, to adapt as circumstances shift.

That’s how you set yourself up for long-term viability and success.

Develop Your Skills, Not Your Platform

Video Marketing – The Basics of Making an Online Video

Online video is hot and made even hotter by the new iPhone video capabilities. So much focus is placed on YouTube because of the number of views it can generate. Video is drastically changing what people view and how they are viewing it. Consumers are moving away from their television sets and spending more time on online video sites to watch their favorite shows and other entertainment. Online video is also still a relative novelty compared to traditional forms of media. Further, and most significantly, reduced ad clutter and the inability to easily skip ads are considerable recall-enhancing factors.

Internet population loves to watch online video. Just four years later, in 2014, it is expected that 77.0% of the US Internet population will watch online video. In other words, 3 out of every 4 people who access the Internet in the US Internet connected TV is going to be a reality. It will dramatically change the ad industry forever.

Advertising.com says 42 percent of consumers have forwarded a video clip to a friend. Advertisers are very excited about online video, which is why the value of sites that tap into the market is so high, according to Ryan Jacob, manager of the Jacob Internet Fund. Jacob, who owns shares of News Corp., said video is "very alluring" to advertisers because it's "easier to monetize" than other forms of advertising.

YouTube and other video sites showed that the main trick to reach millions of users and consumers out there is to make embedding video information as easy as possible. Most of YouTube's views and traffic comes from outside their network from embeds in blogs, news sites and other web sites. YouTube has announced that it is currently redesigning its website in a new format that will feature both premium content and user produced content. Two sources that are familiar with Google's plans for the popular online video sharing site have stated that the site will be doing away with its current navigation scheme which includes tabs for Videos, Channels, and Community. YouTube is already gigantic, so the interest is there. It claims to serve two billion video views per day.

Online video is enjoying a period of rapid growth and the medium is being rapidly embroidered by publishers of all sizes, but as technologies become more mass-market, usability and accessibility become gating factors to adoption. We've seen the interviews to publishers, networks and advertisers from video advertising's inherent complexity first-hand, but we expect broad adoption of VAST 2.0 to lower these barriers and increase the number of publishers monetizing their video content. Online video is big. People now watch online video as much as they do network television.

Marketers are using video on their sites because it is driving better metrics-longer visits and higher conversion rates. In e-commerce, video is driving a double-digit lift in sales and lowering customer service costs. Marketing spend has been funneled into a series of PPC programs in order to drive more and more users to visit a site in the knowledge that a fixed percentage of them will convert into subscribers, users or customers. By shifting some of the focus towards online video, marketers are now able to increase the percentage of conversions without increasing the overall marketing budget.

Social Marketing – An Essential Part of Integrated Marketing Plans

Social Marketing, as a discipline emerged in the early I970's, which refers to application of marketing techniques and theories along with taking care of the social benefit of the consumers and society at large. In its application, social marketing promotes production and consumption of social goods and discourage demerit goods for the advantage of entire society. This was first practiced by some health care companies to support "anti tobacco campaign" in late 1980's and achieved notable success. After that, the concept started gaining importance among leading multi national companies and slowly it was adopted as a part of integrated marketing plans.

Different from commercial marketing, social marketing focuses around social practices and policies and aims at increasing the welfare of the society. Further, at the same point of time, it also makes use commercial marketing policies to achieve certain secondary goals. Another important factor that differentiates it from mainstream marketing it that aims at affecting the social behaviors for the benefit of customers rather than producers and distributors. In a way, indirectly it promotes the standard of living and per capita income in any economy.

Talking on the same line, there are numerous benefits that a society can gain from the application of social marketing. Its application helps in discouraging the production of luxury goods and items, which automatically leads to reducing the social imbalance in the society. More importantly, this concept has brought a realization on to part of corporate and business houses to understand their corporate social responsibility and contribute towards their local community and society. Although, it is altogether a different concept from CSR, but in long run it leads towards the same goal as CSR.

Considering the growing importance of social marketing in the recent past, marketing scholars and business management gurus are engaged in making developments in laying down substantial difference between strategic social and mainstream marketing. Working in the same direction, efforts are being taken to ensure that there is an up gradation in strategy formulation and planning in this area of marketing. More and more research is approached in order to understand insight and thus reaching onto planning development part. Other than that, important element of marketing mix are also been taken into consideration while preparing for the marketing plans. The inclusion of commercial marketing has definitely helped in improving the scope and importance of this discipline and realizing its importance in today's highly competitive business environment.
