With Google ranking secure websites higher, and the latest release of Chrome displaying a warning for non-HTTPS sites, I felt it was a good time to show you how you can easily (and without breaking the bank) add an SSL certificate to your website. Because this sounds too good to be true, I feel it necessary to let you know there are zero affiliate links in this article.
What is SSL?
From CloudFlare – SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This secure link ensures that all data transferred remains private. It’s also called TLS (Transport Layer Security). Millions of websites use SSL encryption everyday to secure connections and keep their customer’s data safe from monitoring and tampering.
Basic Explanation: It’s that green padlock you see in the URL bar of your browser. Chrome now displays it as simply “Secure”. You’ll see it above, on this site.
How to Add SSL to Your WordPress Site for Free
There are various ways you can go about this, but here’s the simple, fast and most cost-effective way.
- Sign up for CloudFlare.
- Add your domain to your CloudFlare account – you’ll find steps to do this within you CloudFlare account.
- Add Universal SSL to your domain. – also within your CloudFlare account.
